The Ghost in Your EyeAfter-Images

The first four chapters traded on a single fact: surrounding colors distort the colors they contain. It is fair to ask why the eye is so easily fooled.

The answer is in the eye itself.

The after-image

Stare at a saturated patch of color for thirty seconds, keeping your gaze fixed. Look away to a plain white wall. A ghost appears — in a color you were never shown. And it is always the complement of the one you stared at.

Stare at red and the ghost is blue-green. Stare at yellow and it is violet. This is the after-image, and no normal eye is exempt from it.

Why it happens

The retina carries receptors tuned to different ranges of the spectrum. Hold your gaze on red and the red-sensitive receptors fatigue — their signal weakens. Move your eyes to white, which contains all wavelengths roughly equally, and the still-fresh receptors dominate. What you perceive is the complement: what’s left after the eye has subtracted the color it was steeped in.

Why it matters

The after-image isn’t a curiosity. It is the mechanism underneath every illusion in the chapters that came before. When a color sits inside a surrounding field, your eye casts the surrounding’s complement onto everything inside it. That is why a grey warms against cool and cools against warm. That is why surrounds subtract their own quality. The process is physiological, automatic, and impossible to switch off.

Every field of color, at every moment, is generating a complementary ghost that tints whatever sits inside it. This is not a lapse of attention you can train away. It is how the visual system is wired. Anyone who claims to see colors unaffected by their surroundings is mistaken about their own perception.
