Two Colors, One FaceSubtraction

The last chapter pushed one color into two appearances. Now the reverse, which is harder: push two physically different colors into a single appearance.

What a surround takes away

Lay three reds on a white field. They read as “red,” their differences muted. Move them onto a saturated red field and the differences leap forward, in hue and lightness at once. Now tune the field exactly to one of the three reds — and that one vanishes, absorbed into its surround.

The principle: a surrounding color subtracts its own quality from whatever it contains. It contributes nothing of itself; what remains visible is everything except the surround’s own quality.

The same rule governs lightness. A surround subtracts its own value just as it subtracts its own hue: match the surround to a swatch’s lightness and the swatch is swallowed. Light colors disappear on light fields; dark on dark.

Convergence

The previous chapter used contrast to drive colors apart. Subtraction is the inverse move. Choose surroundings that remove the qualities by which two colors differ, and the two colors converge in appearance. Two reds easily distinguished on white can be made indistinguishable on a carefully chosen third color.

This is analytic work. You must first identify what makes the two colors different — is it hue? lightness? both? — and then find a surround that subtracts exactly that difference.

Think of it as solving an equation. The unknown is the surround. The constraint is that the eye must read two physically different stimuli as one. The solution exists because perception is relative — and relativity cuts both ways.
