Lighter or Darker?Judging Intensity
Ask someone whether they can tell which of two colors is lighter and they will almost always say yes. Test the claim with real swatches and most people get it wrong more often than they expect, designers and painters included.
The mistake is not careless. Lightness judgments are genuinely hard.
Why it’s hard
Black-and-white images — photographs, prints, screens in dark mode — have trained us to read greyscale fluently. That fluency breaks the instant we step off the grey axis. Comparing the lightness of a saturated blue against a muted orange is a different perceptual problem, and the visual system is not well equipped for it. Hue and saturation interfere; the eye confuses vivid with light and muted with dark.

Arrange the colors below from lightest to darkest, then check your order. The greyscale will appear underneath as the answer key.
A darker color carries more visual weight — more black, or less white. If you missed a few, you are in good company; almost everyone does. The goal isn’t a perfect score. The goal is to calibrate your intuition against ground truth.
The real instruction is in the pairs you couldn’t immediately rank. Those ambiguous pairs are where the visual system is doing the most work — constructing an answer rather than reading one — and that construction is exactly what we need to understand.
Pay attention to colors that sit close in lightness but far apart in hue. Those are the cases that fool trained eyes most consistently.
They will return, with consequences, when we reach the chapters on edges that vibrate and edges that vanish.
