Context Is EverythingThe Relativity of Color

Here is an experiment for the kitchen sink. Fill three bowls — one with warm water, one with cold, one with lukewarm. Put your left hand in the warm bowl and your right hand in the cold. Wait thirty seconds. Now move both hands to the lukewarm bowl.

The same water feels cold to one hand and warm to the other.

This is a haptic illusion — a deception of touch. Your hands aren’t broken. They are reporting relative temperature, not absolute temperature. The sensation depends entirely on what came before.

Color works the same way. A grey square on a dark background looks lighter than the identical grey square on a light background. The same orange next to red drifts toward yellow; next to yellow, it drifts toward red. The physical stimulus has not changed. The perception has.

This is the central fact of color perception: it is relative. A color has no fixed identity apart from its surroundings. Change the neighbor and you change the color — not physically, but perceptually, which is the only sense in which “color” exists for a human observer.

The influence runs along two axes at once. A surrounding color pushes the lightness of what it contains, and it pushes the hue. Both forces act simultaneously, with varying strength. Some colors resist the push; others yield almost completely. Predicting which is which is much of what color theory is actually about.

If this seems like a laboratory curiosity, it isn’t. Every painted wall, every printed page, every photograph, every screen is a stack of contexts. The color you specify is not the color a viewer perceives. Their eyes will modify it, involuntarily and instantly, according to everything else in view.
