Edges That VanishEqual Light Intensity

Now the opposite case, and one of the strangest things color can do: a visible boundary between two colors made nearly invisible — not by blurring or fading, but by the choice of colors alone.

The condition

Only one thing produces the effect: truly equal light intensity between the two colors. Not approximately equal. Not “close enough.” Equal. The term “equal value” gets used loosely in color education, and many people who believe they have seen this effect haven’t.

Raise the grey toward the blue’s lightness. Off the mark, the edge is clear. At true equality, the boundary dissolves. You cannot say where one color ends and the other begins.

Why it is the hardest exercise in the book

Almost no one has hit it cleanly on the first try. The difficulty is not conceptual; it is perceptual. Hue differences interfere with lightness judgments (this is the same problem we met in the lightness-sorting chapter), and the eye desperately wants to read a boundary that isn’t there.

When the boundary does dissolve, the effect is unmistakable. Nature serves it up occasionally: cumulus clouds in horizontal rows, bright white above and grey below. Where the shaded grey of the cloud meets a deep blue sky of precisely the same lightness, the boundary vanishes — cloud and sky become indivisible. Best seen with the sun at your back.

This chapter and the last form a pair. Vibrating and vanishing boundaries are two faces of the same variable: what happens to a boundary when hue contrast is held fixed and lightness contrast is manipulated. Push the lightnesses apart and you get a clean edge. Bring them together and you get either a buzz (opposite hues) or a vanishing act (neighboring hues). The edge is the most information-rich region in any composition. Most of the visual weight of a design lives there.
