Edges That BuzzVibrating Boundaries
Place two colors next to each other that contrast sharply in hue but sit close in lightness. Their shared edge will not hold still. It vibrates — throwing off faint phantom colors, appearing to shimmer or buzz.
Why it happens
The mechanism traces back to the after-image, though its exact behavior is not fully understood. When two colors are far apart in lightness, the brightness contrast dominates and the edge reads cleanly. Bring their lightnesses together — opposite in hue, equal in light — and the edge loses its anchor. The eye cannot lock onto it, and the simultaneous-contrast effects at the boundary produce visible instability.
Slide the green’s lightness toward the red’s. When the two are far apart in light, the boundary is calm. As they converge — equal in light, opposite in hue — the edge begins to buzz.
A loud tool
The effect is genuinely aggressive. It thrills at first and quickly exhausts the eye. It is rarely used except where discomfort is the point — the visual equivalent of a shriek. Op Art was built on it. So is some of the most attention-grabbing advertising and signage.
